How it all started...
First Evangelical Lutheran Church has had a significant presence in Algona for nearly a century and a quarter. Established in 1882 by Swedish Lutherans, the congregation’s original church site was at the corner of Wooster and Lucas. In 1966 First Lutheran constructed a very modern style building in the cornfields east of town. Over the succeeding years, Algona came to surround this site at 226 North Putnam Street. Since 1966 there has been two major additions: a Sunday School and Youth area in 1982 and a vastly enlarged narthex with drive-up canopy that was completed in May 2005. The congregation is well respected for its support of missions, its youth & education emphasis, its music programs, and fellowship opportunities. First Lutheran is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
